Gary Bennett was born in Tokyo, Japan, the second son of Reverends Myrtlebelle and Merril Bennett, career missionaries serving the Church of the Nazarene in Japan. Gary spent his boyhood years on the various islands of Okinawa and Japan, living there until his graduation from high school in 1972.
In 1977 Gary received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho. In 1979 he enrolled at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 1983 with a Master of Divinity degree. In the Spring of 2006, Gary received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. During his time at Gordon-Conwell, Gary was privileged to study under the teaching ministry of Dr. Haddon W. Robinson.
Gary has been married to Cheryl (nee Coulter) for 31 years. They have four children: Kelly, a journalist in San Diego, California; Kristen, an early-childhood educator in Calgary; and Daniel and Leanne, who are both enrolled in their third year at Ambrose University College in Calgary. Leanne is currently serving as a missionary intern in Peru as part of the On-site program at Ambrose.
Gary has served as the Pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Victoria, B.C. since 1990. Prior to this present assignment, Gary served for seven years as Pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.
Gary enjoys backpacking, having hiked the West Coast Trail of Vancouver Island fourteen times. He also enjoys long-distance running, and is an avid salmon fisherman.
